The Torsion Principle is Very Unique
The balance is constructed with flat stainless steel bands which flex as weight is applied.  A "skeleton" is made up of two beams held parallel by three trusses with high tension bands. The center truss acts as the fulcrum and as weight is applied, the bands twist and allow movement of the beams to synchronously teeter up and down.  There are no frictional parts to deteriorate.  Adjustment is permanent, and the balances are rugged and last essentially forever.  These balances are always available for the most accurate of measurements, and continue to operate during  power failures.  (For more information on the Torsion Principle, see The Torsion Balance article on the Articles about Torsion Balances page on this website.)
